Yumma (Mother)

By Neda Khalil

9/26/04

Yumma, don’t be scared for me,

I am here for our land to be free.

Yumma don’t cry because I am gone,

Be happy that I left an impact in hearts and minds like those of words engraved in stone.

Yumma, please don’t have anymore fears,

For this was the journey that we have been in for years.

Yumma, my memory and our people’s resistance will live on forever,

All this suffering we have been through, I do not wish on another.

Yumma, tell my daughter that I love her and she will always be my eyes,

Be strong because you love me; hold back all your cries.

Yumma, tell my son that I did not abandon him, never!

I did it for his freedom and our peoples right to be able to live free, forever!

Yumma, please tell my husband that he will always be my all,

I know he understands and he knows why I took that call.

So Yumma, you see,

This is exactly what had to be.

It was for you, me, our children, and our future.

We need to put an end to this abuse and torture.

And you see Yumma; this is how it is going to end,

With us all joining together as one and finally being able to defend!

So Yumma, ya Oomie, ya Hayatee, stop your tears,

They are of no use, they only cause fears.

Live on and always remember me,

And know because of this instance,

There will be a change and we will be free!
