What Choices Are Left to Palestinians? By Salim Nazzal Al-Jazeerah, May 21, 2006 The Palestinian political scene appears grim. In the Israeli side, there is the Kadima party, which works on the Apartheid, Land-Grab Wall, which will lead to preventing any possible viable Palestinian state. This means that the Palestinians have to re-evaluate the whole two-state peace process. At this moment, a question which was posed by Lenin "What is to be done now" is most important. This question was asked amid the great transformation, which took place in the newly born Soviet Union. In critical times, nations ask such questions when things are unclear or confusing. The natural question is what direction the Palestinians should take now. This question is firstly addressed to Palestinian leaders because at this particular time they hold a major responsibility about reaching some solutions regarding the internal conflict between Hamas and Fateh. This would help Palestinians to come to the international community with a strong message that any real peace in the region requires serious international involvement . A strong message must be sent to the international community that the policy of starving and pressurizing the Palestinian people is far from bringing any peaceful solutions. Punishing the occupied and appeasing the occupier lead only to destructive results. The past experience must have taught the world that the solutions about Palestine failed in the past 60 years because these solutions did not consider the legitimate rights of the native Palestinian population. Palestinians must have no illusion about any possible change in Israel towards recognizing the Palestinian rights. The Zionist state is moving towards more right-wing policies and extreme thinking as perhaps never before. The gap between the Palestinian demand for a just solution and the Israeli policies is too large to bridge. The Zionist project is too extreme to be contained by bilateral negotiations. Palestinians need to consolidate the immunity system in the Palestinian society politically, culturally, and economically because the conflict with the Zionist state will continue for generations to come.
