U.S. airstrikes kill 15 al-Shabab militants in Somalia

Radio Shabelle, March 21, 2020

The U.S. military confirmed Saturday that more than 15 al-Shabab militants were killed in airstrikes in southern Somalia this week.

The U.S. Africa Command (Africom) spokesman Karl Wiest said no civilians were injured or killed as a result of five airstrikes which were carried out in coordination with Somali security forces near Janale on Monday and Tuesday.

The command currently assesses these airstrikes resulted in the deaths of over 15 al-Shabab militants, Wiest said in a statement.

Janale town that lies about 90km south-west of Mogadishu had been the hub for militants’ operations and activities. Now, the town with about 30,000 people is currently under the full control of the joint forces — African Union Mission in Somalia and Somali National Army.

Al-Shabaab members reportedly killed in SNA operation

Radio Shabelle, March 21, 2020 292

Somali commandos have foiled suicide attacks following security operations on the outskirts of Kismayo town.

The forces seized two lorries laden with improvised explosive devices near Bulo-gaduud village, according to Ismail Abdimalik, the commander of the 16th division of Somali commandos.

Speaking to the media, Abdimalik said the forces succeeded to wrest the two vehicles which purportedly heading Kismayo town.

“The vehicles were intercepted following a tip-off and there is no alarm, we have also cleared the way from al-Shabaab,” he said.

The commander noted that during the operations, the forces killed several Al-Shabaab fighters following the confrontation.

It is not clear if the drivers of the vehicles were captured.

Somali forces have recently stepped up operations against al-Shabaab fighters in Lower Jubba and Shabelle regions.

Dozens of al-Shabaab fighters were eliminated during operations by Somali and African Union Mission In Somalia (AMISOM) in these regions.

Al-Shabaab lost control of many towns in the south and central Somalia after their fighters were defeated in battlefields.

The group opted hit and run tactics to attack forces while they use IEDs in the major towns of the country.

SNA troops carry out an operation in Middle Shabelle region

Radio Shabelle, March 22, 2020

Somali army along with HirShabelle state forces have conducted a joint operation against Al-Shabaab in the rural areas between Jowhar and Bal’ad in the Middle Shabelle region.

The allied troops have managed to clear and secure the road that links the two major towns that witnessed deadly attacks by Al-Shabaab in the past.

Senior regional officials and lawmakers were killed in the ambush attacks on Jowhar-Bal’ad that forced HirShabelle officials to use airplanes to reach Jowhar, the state’s capital.

The Somali government has deployed troops to the region who are partnering AU forces in the fight against Al-Shabaab and in efforts to restore stability in the main highway.

Al-Shabaab, despite losing ground is still capable of staging attacks against AU and SNA base as well as car bombs on the main hotels and government installations in Mogadishu.
