Iraqi intelligence kill Islamic State militant in Mosul; another arrested

by Mohammed Ebraheem Sep 9, 2019, 6:48 pm

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) –

An Islamic State militant was killed Monday when army forces stormed a terrorist hotbed in the Iraqi city of Mosul, the Military Intelligence Directorate said.

“Military intelligence forces stormed a terrorist hotbed at the Nineveh island, west of Mosul city, leaving an (alleged member of the) Islamic State dead,” Alsumaria News quoted the directorate as saying.

The troops destroyed the hideout and all its contents, the statement read.

Meanwhile, the directorate said that its forces arrested another Islamic State member in Ramadi city.

The militant, according to the statement, “was responsible for booby trapping vehicles in order to be used later in terrorist attacks by the Islamic State group.”

The Islamic State group appeared on the international scene in 2014 when it seized large swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria, declaring the establishment of an Islamic “caliphate” from Mosul city. Later on, the group has become notorious for its brutality, including mass killings, abductions and beheadings, prompting the U.S. to lead an international coalition to destroy it.

Iraq declared victory over Islamic State in December 2017 with the help of a US-led alliance, having retaken all the territory captured by the extremists in 2014 and 2015.

House explosion kills two Iraqi explosive experts in Mosul

by Mohammed Ebraheem Sep 7, 2019, 3:59 pm

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) –

Two explosive experts were killed Saturday while trying to detonate a bomb at a house in Mosul city, the Iraqi Defense Ministry said.

“A bomb placed inside a house at al Adnanya district in southeastern Mosul went off Saturday morning, leaving two explosive experts killed,” the ministry said in a press statement.

A security operation was launched to put an end to the threat of the leftover bombs in Mosul city.

Mosul has seen almost daily bombings and armed attacks against security members, paramilitary troops and civilians since the Iraqi government launched a wide-scale campaign to retake Islamic State-occupied areas in 2016. Though most of the daily bombings go without a claim of responsibility, Islamic State is expected to be behind many.

The surge in violence between armed groups and government forces has resulted in over five million internally displaced persons across Iraq and left more than 11 million in need of humanitarian assistance, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Sadrist militias kill eight alleged members of the Islamic State in central Iraq

by Mohammed Ebraheem Sep 2, 2019, 2:11 pm

Salahuddin (IraqiNews.com) –

Eight (alleged members of the) Islamic State were killed Monday in violent confrontations with militias affiliated to Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr in central Iraq, a security source said.

A force of the 313th brigade of Saraya al-Salam (Peace Brigades) clashed with a number of Islamic State militants in Samaraa city, north of the capital Baghdad, leaving eight killed, the source told Iraqi news website Alghad Press.

“The clashes also left two members of Saraya al-Salam dead and two others wounded,” the source added.

In December 2017, Sadr ordered his fighters to hand state-issued weapons back to the government following the country’s defeat of the Islamic State group.

Sadr’s Saraya al-Salam fighters took up arms against the extremist group in 2014 after the fall of Mosul and are officially part of the government-sanctioned Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), also known as al-Hashd al-Shaabi.

Sadr called on his fighters to also hand over parts of the territory they control to Iraq’s security forces, however, he stressed that his fighters would remain present as protectors of a holy Shiite shrine in Samarra, north of Baghdad.
