Unidentified gunmen shoot Iraqi serviceman dead in Diyala

by Mohammed Ebraheem Apr 14, 2019, 3:34 pm

Diyala (IraqiNews.com) –

An Iraqi serviceman was killed Sunday in an armed attack in the rural province of Diyala, a security source said as the country still suffers from the lack of stability despite the defeat of the Islamic State militant group in December 2017.

“Unidentified gunmen opened fire at a serviceman while crossing a highway near the Shia-majority city of Khan Bani Saad in the province of Diyala, leaving him dead,” the source told Almaalomah news website.

“Security forces cordoned off the site and launched a manhunt for the culprits,” said the source.

Violence in the country has surged further with the emergence of Islamic State extremist militants who proclaimed an “Islamic Caliphate” in Iraq and Syria in 2014.

The surge in violence between armed groups and government forces has resulted in over five million internally displaced persons across Iraq and left more than 11 million in need of humanitarian assistance, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Diyala (IraqiNews.com) –

Iraqi military intelligence forces on Sunday killed an alleged Islamic State militant and destroyed a number of the group hotbeds in the eastern province of Diyala.

“Acting upon accurate intelligence reports, a security operation was launched to destroy Islamic State terrorist hotbeds in Abu Sayda district in Diyala,” Alghad Press quoted the Iraqi military intelligence directorate as saying in a press statement.

The Iraqi troops killed an alleged Islamic State militant and destroyed several terrorist hotbeds following fierce clashes with the militant group, the statement read.

A large cache of military equipment, bombs and explosive belts were found inside the hideouts, added the statement.

Iraq declared victory over Islamic State in December 2017 with the help of a US-led alliance, having retaken all the territory captured by the extremists in 2014 and 2015.

Despite their defeat, Islamic State militants continue to launch sporadic attacks across Iraq against troops. Security reports indicate that the militant group still poses a threat against stability in the country.

Iraqi troops killed on Saturday two alleged Islamic State suicide bombers following fierce clashes in the western province of Anbar.

“Backed by Iraqi warplanes, troops of the Anbar Operations Command stormed 18 hotbeds of the Islamic State group along the international highway in Anbar province,” Almaalomah news website quoted the Security Media Cell as saying in a press release.
