Curfew imposed in Basra starting this afternoon until further notice

Baghdad Post, September 9, 2018

Basra Operations Command imposed a curfew in the province starting from this afternoon until further notice.

Protestors set fire to part of the city governorate’s building.  Iraqi security forces have killed nine protesters and injured 93 people, including 18 security forces.

Strict measures have been instituted by security forces in the wake of the protests which began in July, the source added.

Security forces have military orders to open fire directly at the protestors in case of an assault on government buildings. Protests demanding clean water, electricity, services, and employment in oil-rich Basra’s neglected communities began on July 8 and spread to several other southern provinces. They erupted again over the weekend.

Protests erupt against deterioration of heath sector in Muthanna

Baghdad Post, September 9, 2018

Hundreds of Iraqi residents in Muthanna province staged protests on Thursday to demand the improvement of the health sector.

In an interview with The Baghdad Post, some protesters said that the health sector in Iraq suffers from poor medical services and scarcity of medicines, pointing out that the province hospitals lack the most basic drugs.

They called for providing hospitals with all drugs and medical supplies.

For over two months, demonstrations have been on going in Baghdad and across southern provinces where people demand better public services, social justice and more job opportunities.

MP demands accountability for killing of protesters in Basra

MP Taoufik al-Kaabi called on Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to hold accountable those responsible for the use of excessive force against demonstrators in the province of Basra.

Five protesters were killed and 16 more were injured during a second day of clashes with security forces in Iraq’s main southern city. Al-Kaabi said that Basra province is one of the richest provinces in Iraq but suffers from many problems in services, infrastructure, and unemployment due to mismanagement. Al-Kaabi called on demonstrators to abide by the peaceful demonstrations and avoid violence.

"Basra has 14 million dollars out of its total estimated liability of petrodollars have not been disposed of yet," added Kaabi. The oil-rich province has been witnessing weeks ago demonstrations in protest against the deteriorating situation there caused by the lack of basic services, unemployment, and poverty.

Five Islamic State members killed, 12 suspects arrested in Kirkuk

Kirkuk (IraqiNews.com) -

Five Islamic State members were killed, while 12 suspects were arrested in a wide-scale operation in several villages in Kirkuk.

A statement by Kirkuk Operations Command said, “Federal Police troops in the province carried out an operation in regions and villages of Tal Shu’air, Codilla, Eteira, Suleiman Bakhshan, Qulli Bek, Dakuk and al-Khaldiya.”

Troops, according to the statement, “managed to kill five militants and left the sixth wounded in a village during confrontations.”

Moreover, three rest houses and a tunnel of 15 meters long were destroyed, the command added.

“12 suspects were also arrested,” the statement said.

On Monday, news reports quoted sources as saying that seven people were killed as Islamic State members attacked al-Bu Shaher village, near Yayji town, west of Kirkuk.

In December, the Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi announced gaining control on all the territories that were captured by Islamic State, since 2014. However, Security reports indicate that the militant group still poses threat against stability in the country. The group still has dormant cells, through which it carries out attacks, across Iraq like it used to do before 2014.

Thousands of militants as well as Iraqi civilians were killed since the government campaign, backed by paramilitary troops and the coalition was launched in October 2016 to fight the militant group, which declared a self-styled “caliphate” from Mosul in June 2014.

Four Islamic State members killed, southwest of Kirkuk: Federal Police

by Nehal Mostafa Sep 2, 2018, 1:28 pm

Kirkuk (IraqiNews.com) -

The Iraqi Federal Police said four Islamic State members were killed, while several tunnels, used by the militant group, were seized, southwest of Kirkuk.

In a statement by Lt. Gen. Shaker Jawdat, Federal Police chief, said troops “carried out an operation, depending on information from the intelligence department that indicated presence of several militants in al-Riyad region in Hawija town. Four militants were killed, while tunnels, that link two rest houses, were seized.”

Last week, Jawdat said two militants were arrested in Kirkuk. One of them was the security leader of the group in al-Zab region, while the other one is Maher al-Obeidi, leader of the Islamic State cells in al-Riyad region.

In December, the Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi announced gaining control on all the territories that were captured by Islamic State, since 2014.

Thousands of militants as well as Iraqi civilians were killed since the government campaign, backed by paramilitary troops and the coalition was launched in October 2016 to fight the militant group, which declared a self-styled “caliphate” from Mosul in June 2014.

Islamic State continues to launch sporadic attacks across Iraq against troops. Security reports indicate that the militant group still poses threat against stability in the country. The group still has dormant cells, through which it carries out attacks, across Iraq like it used to do before 2014.
