Dozens of Palestinians Drown off Alexandria Coast After Leaving Besieged Gaza

September 14, 2014

[ 14/09/2014 - 02:32 PM ]

GAZA, (PIC)--

A number of Gazan families have received phone calls from official Egyptian authorities on Saturday evening telling them that a boat carrying their relatives sunk off Egypt’s Alexandria coast.

Dozens of Palestinians have drowned near the Alexandria coast after a boat boarding dozens of migrants, including children, sank en route to Italy, al-Quds newspaper said quoting a number of Gazan families on Saturday.

Large numbers of migrants have been rescued and taken to Alexandria by the Egyptian Coast Guard.

Search operations for other survivors have been on the go, the same sources told Al-Quds.

The Egyptian authorities called on the migrants’ first-degree-relatives to head to Cairo and take their family members back to Gaza.

Learned sources said the boat had 160 Palestinian migrants on board, mostly from Khan Younis and Rafah, to the south of the besieged Gaza Strip.

Observers said the incident is a direct upshot of the Israeli 51-day long offensive, forcing hundreds of Palestinian civilians to embark on a journey fraught with much danger to save the life of their offspring.
