Warning of attacks against foreign targets in Yemen

Khaled Al-Mahdi, Special to Arab News

SANAA, 30 September 2003 — The United States warned its citizens in Yemen yesterday about possible "terror" attacks, citing information from the Yemeni authorities about a “potential new threat” against foreign targets.

The US Embassy in Sanaa sent a Warden Message to all US citizens in Yemen, which stated that it had received “new information from the Yemeni government regarding a potential new threat to foreign-affiliated and Yemeni targets.”

“United States citizens should review and update their security procedures and take exceptional precautions at this time,” the embassy’s notice added.

The notice urged Americans in Yemen to “exercise particular caution at locations frequented by foreigners, such as the Sanaa Trade Center, American-affiliated franchises, restaurants and shops in the Haddah area in Sanaa and in Aden and elsewhere.”

Also yesterday, Najran Governor Prince Mishaal ibn Saud opened a new outpost on the Kingdom’s border with Yemen in Wadeea. The Wadeea post is expected to strengthen economic and commercial ties between the two neighbors.
