Militants Torch Two Girls’ Schools in Afghanistan Arab News, Agence France Presse • Reuters MAZAR-E-SHARIF, Afghanistan, 30 September 2003 — Suspected militants torched two tented girls’ schools in northern Afghanistan at the weekend and left behind leaflets warning girls not to go to school, a UN official said yesterday. The schools were set alight Saturday in Chahar Bolak, 40 kilometers northwest of the main northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif, said the UN official who wished to remain anonymous. Tents are widely used as makeshift schools and classrooms across Afghanistan as the country struggles to rebuild after 23 years of conflict. The leaflets also warned non-governmental organizations to leave Chahar Bolak district. Up to seven militiamen have been killed in clashes between the armed factions of rival warlords in northern Afghanistan, militia officials said yesterday. Fighting between the ethnic Tajik Jamiat militia and its rival ethnic Uzbek Junbish faction erupted Sunday in Qalah-e-Shahr, Saripul province and was continuing yesterday, Jamiat and Junbish officials said. “In this fighting five people were killed and two injured,” said Gen. Abdul Sabor, deputy to Jamiat leader Gen. Atta Mohammad. “It started yesterday and is continuing today,” he told AFP, citing reports from his militiamen in Qalah-e-Shahr, 180 kilometers southwest of Mazar-e-Sharif. Gen. Majit Rozi, deputy of Junbish leader Deputy Defense Minister Abdul Rashid Dostam, confirmed the fighting but said he had no details of casualties. In neighboring Balkh province, one Jamiat and one Junbish commander were killed in a clash Saturday in Sholgara, 40 kilometers south of Mazar, Rozi and Sabor said, adding that the rival commanders were old enemies.
