Al Zawahiri tells Muslims to resist crusade

Gulf News, Cairo |Reuters | 29-09-2003

An audiotape attributed to Al Qaida deputy Ayman Al Zawahiri and broadcast on Dubai-based Al Arabiya and Al Jazeera satellite channels yesterday said the American "crusade" targets Islam and Muslims.

"The crusade camp that is led by America ... is targeting Islam and Muslims, even if it claims that it is fighting terrorism. ... This campaign is seeking to abolish Islam as a doctrine and a law," the voice said.

The tape appeared to be recent, as the speaker referred to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's visit to India earlier this month and the September 6 resignation of Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas.

Al Zawahri urged Muslims to "resist this Jewish crusade that is seeking to abolish Islam and Muslims."

Al Zawahiri also urged Pakistanis to overthrow President Pervez Musharraf for "betraying" Islam.

He blasted the Pakistani president for aiding the United States in its war in Afghanistan against Al Qaida and the Taliban, and accused him of planning to send Muslim troops to Iraq "to be killed instead of American soldiers".
