Palestinian detainees riot against security in Israel detention camp

Khaleej Times, (AFP)

30 October 2003

JERUSALEM - Riots broke out on Thursday between Palestinian prisoners and security guards at the Ketziot detention camp in southern Israel, Israeli army sources and a Palestinian rights organization said.

According to the Bethlehem-based prisoners’ club, the detainees were protesting their harsh living conditions at Ketziot when they clashed with guards there.

The organization’s head, Issa Qaraqa, managed to talk with detainees over the telephone and said teargas had been used to control the rioters and that ambulances had arrived at the scene, signaling people had been injured in the clashes.

The army said it would publish an explanatory statement later on Thursday.

The Palestinian prisoners affairs ministry estimates the number of Palestinians behind Israeli bars at 5,892.

Qaraqa said some 1,200 Palestinians are being held at Ketziot in the Negev desert, near Israel’s border with Egypt.
