6 Die in Yemen Clashes

Khaled Al-Mahdi, Special to Arab News

SANAA, 29 October 2003 — Tribal clashes in the central Yemeni province of Marib left six clansmen dead and one injured yesterday, tribal sources said.

Automatic rifles and hand grenades were used in the clashes between members of the Al-Saida and Al-Almaraziq clans, both of which belong to the Daham tribe, a tribal chief requesting anonymity told Arab News.

The evening battle took place as tribesmen from the two rival clans came across each other near the municipal headquarters of Marib, some 170 km east of the capital Sanaa.

Local sources in Marib said the two clans have been involved in a running vendetta for three years.

Police officials said security forces rushed to the scene and managed to stop the fighting. They arrested an unspecified number of armed men belonging to both clans.

The clash came a day after a shooting spree at a mosque in the central province of Dhamar killed a worshipper and injured two others. Police officials said two groups disputing the performance of prayers were involved in Monday’s shootout.

Armed clashes are common in Yemen, a largely tribal society where men carry firearms openly and tribes often settle disputes with guns. Acts of revenge and disputes over acreage are the main causes behind tribal clashes in this impoverished Arab country.

Yemen has also seen several anti-Western attacks during the last few years.

In October 2000, a boat laden with explosives rammed the U.S. destroyer USS Cole at the southern harbor of Aden. Seventeen US sailors were killed in the attack, for which the Al-Qaeda network was blamed.
