Mayor of Polish city banned from Bush festivities over Iraq Jordan Times, 5/30/03
WARSAW (AFP) — The mayor of the Polish city of Krakow said on Thursday he had been left out of welcoming ceremonies for visiting US President George W. Bush because of his opposition to the Iraq war. The mayor, Jacek Majchrowski, said he had been left out at the “suggestion” of the US authorities. He said the Polish foreign ministry had respected Washington's wishes. “I consider the services of another state designating the place where a mayor of a Polish city can go as a lack of respect for the city and its elected representative,” he was quoted as saying by the PAP news agency. “It is a violation of the rules of democracy and an attempt to interfere in the sovereignty of the state,” he added. Earlier this year, as war in Iraq loomed, Majchrowski wrote an article — “Pax Americana” which was highly critical of Washington's Iraq stance. He also declared his support for pacifist demonstrations in the streets of Krakow against the war in Iraq. Bush arrives in Poland on Friday on the first leg of a European tour, to thank Warsaw for its help in the war, before going on to celebrations to mark the 300th anniversary of St Petersburg, Russia's former imperial capital.
