Germany's Fischer says Middle East roadmap is a European baby

Jordan Times, 5/28/03

CHERSONISSOS, Greece (AFP) — German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer said the so-called roadmap serving as the basis for Palestinian and Israeli peace talks was a “European baby” but that Washington was “in the driver's seat,” a diplomatic source said on Tuesday. The source said Fischer made the remarks at a dinner Monday with his counterparts at EuroMed, an annual gathering between EU and Arab foreign ministers under way on the Greek island of Crete. Those present at the dinner had agreed on the need to press ahead with peace talks after the Israeli government on Sunday conditionally accepted the roadmap, already endorsed by the Palestinian leadership. Drafted by the Middle East Quartet grouping the EU, United Nations, Russia and the United States, the plans calls for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state by 2005.
