US troops attacked in Fallujah

FALLUJAH, Iraq - US troops in the flashpoint town of Fallujah came under rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) attack overnight, local people told AFP on Sunday.
There were no reports of casualties in the midnight attack on the troops who had taken up position in the marketplace, they said.
The soldiers returned fire but apparently without hitting any of the attackers, who fled.
The troops then deployed across Fallujah and set up checkpoints in different neighborhoods as well as at the entrances to the town, the residents said.
A US army spokesman said he was unable to confirm the attack, the third reported in the area in four days. US forces have recently stepped up their presence in the town, carrying out intensive searches across broad swathes of the region.
Fallujah, 50 kilometres (30 miles) west of Baghdad, has been tense since US troops shot dead at least 16 people at a demonstration in late April
