Iraqi killed, two US soldiers wounded in attack 29 June 2003 BAGHDAD - An Iraqi civilian was killed and two US military police soldiers were wounded in Baghdad on Sunday when an explosion targeted a US convoy, the latest in a series of hit-and-run strikes on occupation forces. Hours earlier in a separate incident on Saturday night, attackers lobbed two grenades near US soldiers guarding the Iraqi National Museum, the soldiers said. The Americans escaped harm but a neighbouring store was damaged. There were no casualties. “We do not know if it intended to hit our position or to hit that little store that is down there. Both grenades exploded near that store,” Sgt. John Kuzar, one of the soldiers guarding the musem, told Reuters Television. A US military spokesman said the two wounded Americans from the convoy were evacuated to a military hospital. There were no details on exactly how the Iraqi civilian died. Two military vehicles were damaged, the spokesman said. US forces have been targeted repeatedly in recent days by what senior military officials consider to be die-hard loyalists of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, whose 24-year rule was ended by the US-led invasion in April. At least 22 Americans have been killed by hostile fire since US President George W. Bush declared major combat over on May 1. Two others were found dead in unclear circumstances on Saturday. Six British military police were killed in the south of Iraq on Tuesday. The attacks have also hit Iraqi bystanders. On Friday two Iraqis were
injured in a town outside Baghdad when a US convoy was targeted by
explosives.
