Israel wavers over immediate US strike on Iraq: poll
(AFP), Khaleej Times,

JERUSALEM - Israelis are swinging away from support for an immediate US strike against Iraq in favour of the UN weapons inspectors continuing their mission, an opinion poll showed on Friday.

Of those questioned in the poll published in the daily Maariv, 49 percent said the inspectors should carry on in order to bring about a peaceful solution to the crisis.

By contrast, 45 percent said they supported an immediate US-led attack against Iraq while six percent did not express an opinion.

The Jewish respondents mostly backed an immediate attack, with 51 percent, compared to 75 percent of Israel’s Arab minority which expressed its preference for a peaceful resolution.

Two weeks ago a poll in the same paper gave 51 percent supporting an immediate US attack compared with 43 percent in favor of a peaceful settlement.

Friday’s poll was carried out on a sample of 600 Israelis and has a 4.5 percent margin of error.

The Israeli government supports a US-led strike aimed at toppling Iraqi President Saddam Hussein’s regime.

Although the risk of an Iraqi retaliation against Israel is quite low, the Jewish state still fears Iraq could fire Scud missiles at it as happened during the 1991 Gulf War.
