The
exhibition, Sheherazade: Risking the
Passage, contemporary art by Muslim women, will be held at the El
Colegio Gallery, February 12 through March 15, 2003. Nine artists from
the U. S. and Canada, working in painting, sculpture, film, photography,
installation and performance, are taking part.
They are:
Kitty Aal, Hend Al-Mansour, Sylvat Aziz, Doris Bittar, Lalla
Essaydi, Sehr Jalal, Sherazad Jamal, Hiba Mohammad and Michelle Mehri
Mousavi.
The artists seek to blaze a trail for other choices and
possibilities for Muslim women and to be role models in expressing their
own voices.
This exhibition will also expand the tolerance window and build
bridges between this minority and the general Minnesota audience.
Gallery hours are Mondays
through Thursdays, 12 - 5; Fridays and Saturdays, 5 - 10; and Sundays, 2 -
8, or by appointment.

Women's Art Institute lecture. A
panel of three Muslim women artists will talk about their work, their
unique backgrounds, and the challenges of fitting into the bigger artworld.
Participating artists are painter/sculptor Sylvat Aziz,
photographer/painter Lalla A Essaydi and filmmaker Michelle Mehri Mousavi.
The discussion will be moderated by installation/performance artist
Hend Al-Mansour.

Al-Adha celebration.
Painter/sculptor Sylvat Aziz, photographer Lalla A Essaydi and
Minneapolis filmmaker Michelle Mehri Mousavi will talk about the source
and meaning of their imagery.
The dialogue will be moderated by performance/installation artist
Hend Al-Mansour.
Islamic cultures will be presented through music, ethnic food,
commodities, book sales and henna painting.

Women's Art Institute lecture. Installation
/performance artist Hend Al-Mansour will talk about her identity as a
contemporary Muslim woman artist.
Her work tells the stories of Arabian women through use of Arabian
women's clothes, commodities and cosmetics.
She will also talk about how the work of women artists of Islam is
shaping contemporary cultural issues. Location:

Saturday,

International Women's Day celebration with honored guest speaker
Raheel Raza.
Ms Raza, a journalist and renowned speaker on human rights and
gender equality, will speak about contemporary Muslim women's struggle
towards a progressive Islam.
The celebration also includes a Women in Black demonstration.
Women in Black vigils are performed all over the world to arouse
communities to take action against violence and as a visual expression of
women standing in solidarity for peace.
In addition, Islamic cultures will be presented through ethnic
food, music, commodities, henna painting and book sales.
