Makkah Film to Be Broadcast in Canada today Barbara Ferguson, Arab News Correspondent
WASHINGTON, 30 August 2003 — A documentary detailing the development of the holy city of Makkah will be broadcast throughout Canada today. The one-hour documentary covers the step-by-step development of the Holy Mosque there. Broadcast on three television cable stations in Canada this evening, the documentary provides information “from the beginning of Islam to the end of the reconstruction of the Holy Mosque of Makkah,” said S.G.P. Jafry, president of Jafry Communications, based in Scarborough, Ontario. “This documentary creates pride and spreads Islamic teachings and provides information about new buildings in Makkah. This is especially useful for the people who are unable to travel there,” said Jafry in a phone interview yesterday. One of the channels showing the documentary is a Christian channel, said Jafry. “Our largest audience in Canada is non-Muslim. We provide non-controversial and factual information about Islam, and this documentary provides many details of the buildings in Makkah that non-Muslims will never be able to see otherwise.” Jafry, who says he’s been in the broadcasting business for 35 years in Canada, is distributing a documentary that was made jointly by the Saudi Ministry of Information and the Bin Laden group, who were the contractors of the film. “A Muslim broadcaster is different than Islamic broadcaster. Anyone can be a Muslim, but he can do things that are not Islamic — regarding entertainment, etc. But an Islamic broadcaster only broadcasts Islamic things — this is what I am,” said Jafry. Jafry said this broadcast will be his last. “I am closing my four shows at the end of this week. My shows were broadcast in Canada and Europe.” He said he’s closing shop for two reasons: “I am over 65, have a heart problem, the tension and work load is too much; and my doctor told me that if I don’t reduce my work, that I shouldn’t come back to see him.”
