Al Arabiya defends airing death threat tape

Khaleej Times (Reuters)

30 August 2003

DUBAI - An Arab television station defended yesterday the airing of a videotape containing death threats against members of the Iraqi Governing Council, saying such information might have helped save lives.

On Tuesday, Dubai-based Al Arabiya broadcast a tape from previously unheard-of militant groups in Iraq threatening to kill members of the US-formed council and other Iraqis cooperating with American troops.

The airing of the tape angered Washington, which demanded that the owners of the station act to prevent what it called incitement to murder and terrorism.

But Al Arabiya news editor, Salah Nejm, told Reuters yesterday that not broadcasting the warning "might have blocked information that could have helped save lives".
