Gulf News says: Save the children
  06-04-2003

One of the most timely suggestions concerning the war in Iraq has come from a Russian doctor who specialises in providing succour to children in disaster zones. Doctor Leonid Roshal wants the U.S. to guarantee a 'green corridor' for the evacuation of Iraqi children, especially those needing urgent medical attention, to neighbouring countries.

His proposal has won the support of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Dr. Roshal has requested the Americans to agree not to bomb certain roads for a given period. France and Morocco have already agreed to treat the wounded and it can be safely assumed that Iraq's immediate neighbours would step in to help these innocents if conditions are put in place to move them to safety.

Dr. Roshal is even now lobbying the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and Unicef to help make this proposal a reality. This represents a golden opportunity for the U.S. to demonstrate its concern for the civilian population. This is the kind of humanitarian act on the ground that will decidedly win the support of the international community.

The involvement of the Red Cross should make it possible to win the cooperation of the Iraqi forces in making the plan work. Dr. Roshal has gone on record as saying that this could be a long shot, and that some might even see this as a utopian dream. But then, in these traumatic times, nothing short of utopia will do.
