Arrest of Abbas is in violation of the 1993 Palestinian-Israeli peace agreement, signed by US, says Erikat

aljazeera.net, 4/16/03

The US forces arrested the Palestinian leader Muhammed Abbas south of Baghdad yesterday. Abbas was a member of the executive committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). He was accused of involvement of hijacking an Italian ship, which resulted in the death of an American in 1985.

The Palestinian cabinet member, Saeb Erikat criticized the arrest as illegal and called on the US to release Abbas because the arrest is in violation of the 1993 peace accords. The 1993 Israeli-Palestinian peace accord signed by the PLO, Israel, and the US guaranteed that members of the PLO should not be arrested or prosecuted for their actions that they did before September 13, 1993. That accord was signed by President President Clinton and Warran Christopher (US), as well as Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres (Israel), and Yasser Arafat and Mahmoud Abbas (PLO).

Erikat added that Abbas's role was to negotiate ending the hijacking and saving the lives of passengers. Since then, Abbas lived in Iraq and he used to enter the Palestinian territories with permission of the Israeli government. In particular, he attended the meetings of the Palestine National Council, in 1996, and he was never arrested by Israel.

Bassam Darwish, a spokesperson of the Palestine Liberation Front, that Abbas leads,  urged the US to release Abbas, particularly because the US Attorney General has closed the case against Abbas in 1996.
