France has celebrated the commemoration of the Bastille Day, in remembrance of of storming the Bastille prison on July 14, 1789, which led to the French Revolution. However, a member of a Neo-Nazi and hooligan group attempted to assassinate the French President, Jacques Chirac, as his procession passed by the Arc de Triomphe. The French police quickly arrested the man before he could open fire from his rifle. Comment: The incident comes following a sharp rise of the extreme right wing movement on the French national scene and after achieving major successes in national elections. Chirac is perceived by the right wing groups as a barrier for their control of the Presidency and the legislature because he represents the right of the center, which enabled him to win the votes of most of the French.
