SAN ANDREAS

A Movie Review

By Ahmed El-Najjar

Al-Jazeerah, CCUN, June 12, 2015

San Andreas is a new movie, which was released on May 29, 2015. It was directed by Brad Peyton and produced by Beau Flynn, Hiram Garcia, and Tripp Vinson. The main Cast Members are Dwayne Johnson as Ray, Carla Gugino as Emma, and Alexander Daddario as Blake.

The Other Cast members are Paul Giamatti as the chief, seismologist Lawrence Hayes, Will Yun Lee as his assistant Dr. Kim Park, Hugo Johnstone-Burt as Ben, and Art Parkinson as Ollie.

The movie starts with Ray, the main character an LA Fire Department helicopter – rescue pilot flying back to the base. Ray is in the middle of a divorce from his wife Emma and he is planning a vacation with his daughter.

But his daughter decides to go on a vacation with her mother and her mother’s billionaire boyfriend, Daniel, instead. So when they get to San Francisco, Emma goes to a restaurant to have lunch with Daniel’s Sister, Susan, which leaves Blake with her mother’s boyfriend.

Daniel leaves to a business meeting, which leaves Blake in the lobby alone. There, she meets this guy Ben, and his little brother, Ollie, an engineering student from the UK seeking employment at the office. They start talking about what they are going to do in San Francisco after Ben’s interview is over. Then, Daniel comes back and takes Blake to his car. There, they encounter an earthquake that traps them in the parking garage of the Building.

Meanwhile, at Caltech, the chief seismologist, Lawrence Hayes, and his Assistant Dr. Park, are at the Hoover Dam. They made a ground-breaking prediction about how to detect and prepare for earthquakes. Suddenly, an unknown and unexpected earthquake hits at 7.1 on their machine. The earthquake causes the dam to collapse, kills Park in the process, and floods the area.

While Emma and Susan are having lunch in San Francisco, the building that they are in starts Shaking. Emma calls her ex-husband, Ray, to come and rescue her. So, he gets in a rescue helicopter to save his ex-wife.  He tells her to get on the very top of the building so he can see her. But, that is easier said than done because the building crumbles down.

At the same time, Blake is stuck in a car in the parking garage by herself because Daniel leaves her alone. While Daniel is leaving, Ben hears Blake screaming for help. So, he tries to help her but the car is smashed and she is trapped. He pokes holes in the tires and the car is lowered, so she can get out.

To make a Long story short, San Francisco and a place called San Andreas are destroyed by a 9.2 earthquake, which never happened in California’s history.

Finally, Ray managed to save Emma and Blake. Because Ben was a hero, they started dating which was the end of the movie.

All in all, it is a great movie! The special effects were impressive, particularly when the buildings were falling down. The Graphics were great, particularly, when the Tsunami hit San Francisco. This movie is suspenseful, such as when Ray was going to rescue his family. It is also exciting and maybe worth the money to pay for and watch it.
