By Dr. E.A. Richards, Special to Arab News

WASHINGTON, 4 August — When the Israeli cowards flew their American made and armed F-16 fighter jet into a sleepy Gaza night, firing a laser guided missile, murdering in their sleep 15 Palestinians, of which one was a 15 year old Palestinian girl, and two innocent Palestinian babies, wounding 145 other Palestinians asleep at the time, and in the process destroyed 5 Palestinian residences, the silence of the American media was deafening.

Oh sure, George Bush, from his position in bed with Ariel Sharon, was allowed to mildly criticize Israel's "heavy handedness" in a tongue in cheek comment which carried all the power and prestige as a kiss on that same unkosher cheek. Then, what happened?

To retaliate against the Israeli usual sneak attack against a people with no real arms, no stinger missiles, no means of defense against the Israeli army Wehrmact, the Hamas group set off a bomb at the Hebrew University, where 7 students, including 5 Americans, were killed.

Then, another explosion, one fired off by newspaper ink, television news broadcasts, and a US president and government that became really "furious" at the bombing.

The Washington Post, the New York Times, the Atlanta Constitution, and all of the other pro-Israeli news hounds bayed at the moon in unison over the event. Unlike the rocketing at Gaza, the commentators and writers said this was a true attack on Israel and revenge should be sought. All was blamed on Yasser Arafat, Sharon's favorite scapegoat, as though Arafat has the power to control such events.

This scapegoating does not work any more. Israel in its mad quest to take over all of Palestine, and kill or deport all Palestinians, has destroyed the PA police stations, arrested and imprisoned most of the PA police, and has broken up communications between Arafat's headquarters and other factions in the West Bank.

Here is how the charade is played out.

First, Israel, with help from Bush and other administration flacks, calls on Arafat to perform tasks which he cannot do because of the Israeli occupation, then blames him for not bowing to the US/Israel will. Then they call on Arafat to speak out against the retaliatory bombings, and when he does, they say they don't believe him.

Ironic, isn't it? The Israelis are the greatest liars and propagandists the world has ever seen. The lies began in 1948 and are still continuing, one of the biggest being their contrived version of the sneak attack on the USS Liberty on 8 June 1967 when the Israeli forces killed 34 American sailors and wounded over 170.

The Israelis have brought lying to an art form.

As to the 5 American students that died, why weren't they studying in the United States, at Yale, or Vassar, instead of being in a foreign country in which a genocidal war against Palestine was going on? If those students were, like many other such "American" students that go to work, study, live, or join the Israeli army, then they must have known they would be in jeopardy.

Those students were in Israeli because their allegiance was to Israel, rather than to the United States, and this allegiance had consequences that should have been foreseen by them or their parents. It is said by some Israelis that the Americans who come to study or fight in Israel are more fervently Zionist than even those who were born there. And ever since the bombing at the Hebrew University, there has been a massive and continuos reporting by the media, unlike Gaza, with the catch phrase, "seven students were killed, of which 5 were American." But where was the American media coverage to report that between March and May, since the Israeli jackboots attacked and occupied Palestine towns and cities such as Jenin, that the UN reported 497 Palestinians were murdered and another 1,447 were wounded.

It was not told because of reporters' fears of retaliation from the pro-Israelis that control the US media, government, and finance, reporters like Tom Brokaw, Dan Rather, Jim Lehrer, Rush Limbaugh, Sam Donaldson, George Will, Bob Schieffer, Peter Jennings, and the rest of the kow tows to Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.

Is it a truism, as some have said, that there is now a superpower in the world, the 51 United States of Israel-America, with its capital in Tel Aviv, and its supreme ruler Ariel Sharon, who tells George Bush (a good president until it comes to Israel) and the rest of the 50 states. What to do and what not to do, and making us pay to the nose for the advice. Perhaps we are closer to that horrid, unforgivable, distasteful, woeful and hapless condition than one would think. Wake up America! Wake up United Nations! Wake up World!

Stop the Israeli-Sharon-Zionist genocide in Palestine.
