Lost identity BENADIR is the coastal region of southern Somalia, which extends from Warsheikh in the north to as far south as Ras Kiamponi. With the highest population density in the whole country, Benadir was historically known for its cotton industry, goldsmiths, trade, fishing, agriculture, construction, and schools. Throughout the centuries, Benadir flourished to become one of the most important trading coastal regions in East Africa. It is inhabited by communities who have succeeded in forging common cultural values, beliefs, and a distinct identity. The Benadiris are known for their values of hard work, tolerance, non-violence, and peaceful co-existence. A multi-ethnic population, it includes Arabs, Bantus and Cushites. The Benadiris did not participate in the recent civil war in Somalia. But as the conflict spread, our community became a victim of the tribal war. The World Disasters Report 1997 states: "Most of the victims in Somalia were members of the Bantu and Benadir clans, sedentary coastal groups who traditionally live in uneasy co-existence with neighbouring ethnic Somali groups." For this reason, half of our people fled the country in search of peace. In this tragic time, the Benadiris suffered much loss and devastation. Yet they rose to the challenge and survived, though not within the boundaries of their country. The buildings of old Mogadishu, Merca and Brava, which the Benadiri ancestors, founded with their meagre resources and sweat more than a thousand years ago, have been destroyed. But while personal property might have vanished, our history remains intact. This identity will continue to stand for as long as we are proud of who we are, treasure our past, perpetuate our traditional culture, and continue our efforts to disseminate and teach our history to the new generation. Although the Benadiris of today try to preserve their Arab identity, customs and traditions, they have been forced to lose some aspects of their culture like the Arabic language, so as to able to survive. Today, a few scholars like me who want their community to recover its identity and the pride of the Arabic culture, cannot do much without the help of the Arab brothres who can support them so they can achieve their goals. They have access, both to the media and their respective governments. I believe that a segment of the restoration work of the Benadiri community involves the undertaking of elaborate research and studies of this community in Somalia. A systematic study will provide documents that will serve as a rallying point in the enhancement of relations with our brothers. It will also provide the Benadiri people with a unified Arabic identity and direction that is grounded in solid research and systematically formatted documents of both the past and present. - Mohamed Abati, Wellington, New Zealand
Dear editor, Salaam Its nice to see your website (www.aljazeerah.info) up and running. I discovered your website when a friend emailed me a link to your website and since then your website is the first place i go to every morning for news about the Arab world. I sincerely appreciate the efforts which you have taken to bridge the gap between the thinking of the western world about the middle east, arabs and islam in general and the actual reality. I still not fully do not know the actuall root cause for the Isreli-Palestinian conflict. I would appreciate if u could provide a few links wherein i can read about it in detail. All that we have been getting here by way of news and from websites of the major networks in India is a lot less than what i have been reading in your website. Of course they do report when there are any killings, but then again the news is not given any priority after that. Dr.El-Najjar I would also appreciate if you wrote about the problems faced by Muslims in the counties like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. Problems have plaged India and Pakistan right from the time of partition over the Kashmir issue. Millions of men, women and children both Muslims and Hindus have been rendered homeless or killed. Fifty five years should have been more than enough time for the two counties to solve whatever problems they had between them but this hasn't happened and i don't know whether it will happen in my lifetime( btw i am a 24 year old computer professional from India). It really hurts to see nations and rulers clamor for more land, more resources and more power at the cost of human life. I just wish that they realise that the world has enough for all our needs but not enough for our greed. I wish us all PEACE and please do keep up the good work! Allah Hafiz Mubeen Saliha
Editor: Look at the news and opinion links and you will find that Kashmir news is well covered, like other Islamic causes. With regard to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, read my articles and editorials. They will give you basic information and refer you to other resources.
In as much as US President Bush, his defence secretary Rumsfeld, secretary of state Powell --- all had persistently and knowingly lied on record to the people of the US as well as the world community, about the WMD with Iraq ---- (in the State of the Union address to the nation, Bush declared Iraq has ‘up to 30,000 warheads, 500 tons of chemical weapons, 25,000 liters of anthrax, 38,000 liters of botulinum toxin and ----- a secret push (program) for nuclear weapons.), is there no law to haul them into US courts for committing perjury and risking the lives of their army personnel as well as the security of the US itself, through such blatant lies and go to war against a UN member country without any international sanction? Where are the famous laws of perjury that US justice had always be so justifiably proud, as falsehood is the foundation of all crimes, big or small. GHULAM MUHAMMED, MUMBAI, India

[*See: "The obscure goat story of 9-11"] For that matter, why did he pretend that he first learned of the attacks in that classroom, when he had actually been briefed as he left his hotel that morning? Why has there been no public investigation into the billions of dollars 'earned' by insider trading of United and American Airlines stock before 9/11?" A minister quits, buildings burn, rubbish rots. So much for the 'reconstruction' --by Donald Macintyre "It was just another day in the process of 'getting Baghdad back to normal'.
