Dear Editor,
Next year November we have another
election.
That can provide us for some other
selection.
I know your affairs at hand keep you on
call,
but the politics here shadow over us
all.
Burdened to one side is our news,
and distorted now are our views.
Expose of any presidential candidates who
speak peace would be great,
and might just help seal this current
president's fate.
The war euphoria of the moment,
later must succumb to a more reflective
component.
And then it is the time for peaceful
people to make a way.
Support such effort I beg all and anyone
who has some means to pay.
And although there is great intimidation
by most powerful and devious forces please do participate in
America,
Oh Aljazeerah,
Show us what so many here have forgotten,
before even worse is begotten.
Respectfully,
Mike Jones
Whatever else may happen, you can feel good that you made every effort to provide Americans with an alternative perspective on major world events. Certainly this should be a goal of all social scientists in some form or fashion, yet few invest as much time, talent, and effort in doing so as you have. Somewhat parenthetically, I note that www.palestinechronicle.com carries some of the same type of alternative perspectives as has aljazeerah.info but thus far, has experienced fewer problems. I suspect that the aljazeerah term galvanized much of the hostility. Thousands of Americans are better informed and more willing to question government pronouncements as a result of your efforts. You are an American in the tradition of Jefferson and Madison. Alan Balboni, Las Vegas
Hi. I agree with you. Democracy demands that we express our political views without worry about violent retribution. Death threats to you are not in keeping with democratic principles. Patriotism is not equivalent to flag-waving, you are a patriot of free speech and democracy. The fundamental unit of democracy is our right to vote. The fundamental currency of democracy is free expression. Your web site expresses the views of people who see the political landscape differently than do the war hungry followers of Mr. ... and Mr. ... I hope you get Al-Jazeerah back on line soon. Good luck Thanks. - Chuck Donnelly
Dear Editor:
I just wanted to add my support for you
and your organization. Aljazeerah performs a valuable service by
gathering and disseminating information and news independently.
These threats make me ashamed and embarrassed.
I have been reading English Aljazeerah to
get perspective on the situation in the middle east, and,
particularly, Iraq. However, I have learned so much more about
other parts of the region thanks to Aljazeerah and I wish you all the
best. I look forward to a prompt resumption of service.
Sincerely,
Holly Horne
I heard about your site in NPR and did wonder what would be the effect. I am very sorry to read that it did have awful consequences. My wishes that you and your family are safe (and that your feelings of safety may be restored soon). M Takemoto
I recently visited your website and
found it very disappointing that it is no longer up. I also was
disheartened by your post explaining death threats that you have
received and the labeling of your work as "anti-U.S." in
many media outlets. I wanted to express my support of the work you
do to try and bring a different perspective and one which I think we
desperately need.
Unfortunately, wars will always
continue when there is willful ignorance and discrediting of
the viewpoint and culture of one side by the other. This
is true of both the "western" and the Muslim world.
It is equally unfortunate, and ironic, that through ignorance and misplaced Patriotic zeal, not to mention spurred on by inflamatory, jingoistic journalism, someone would partake in the very things this government is purportedly fighting against and himself become a "terrorist" by threatening another for utilizing the freedom that we so like espousing. However, such an example is proof of how much we need the understanding provided by websites such as yours even if many do not agree with what is expressed. The demand for it should also help confirm the importance of your work. I hope that others will realize this as well and provide much deserved support instead of threats. I would personally like to thank you for the time and effort dedicated to this endeavor and hope that you are back soon. Gerson Terol
When danger is very close to us, it stings harder. I just received a note from Dr. El-Najjar, the Al-Jazeerah editor who posts some of my own work on this site. He directed me to the following explanation of why I would have to hold off on a current submission. This kind of intimidation is growing in this country, and even the mainstream media is picking up on some of it. Worse than the intimidation itself would be our complacency toward it. This kind of information needs to be dispersed. The URL (regular site currently shut down) for the explanation is listed at the bottom. Please keep Hassan A. El-Najjar and his safety in your thoughts and in your determination to stop the control that is trying to take over our country and silence those of us who don't repeat the party line. Thank you, Lisa Saavedra
Salaam Hassan, Hope you are in good health and o.k. I managed to log onto your website today with a lot of difficulty due to the continuous attacks to your website. I am shocked, frustrated and upset to know that you have had life threats just because you and a lot of other people have different opinions on various major and serious global political issues from what "the media" has been feeding us for decades. I just can't understand why these people are using these cheap tactics to block other people's freedom of speech and expression. I think this action only conirms how dangerous this world has become and the divides in the civilisations are becoming more evident, people are being deprived of information and facts. Any other sources information that show different picture from the superpowers version are terminated. The world is not allowed to feel sad or sympathetic to victims of war and victims of brutal military might and injustice. hope to hear from you soon and good luck with your website. Please keep up the good work, we , the peace and justice loving people are all with you. HUSNA NAIM
If the American people know the truth they will demand peace and justice, that’s the theory and I hope it’s true. I wish you good fortune and a peaceful environment for yourself, your work and your family. With my best regards, Dorothy Lavalle
Dear Editor Dr. El-Najjar, About a week or two past I wrote on my personal
website www.ricktalbot.com
recommending people to read your website while it was still available. I
had a feeling that this would happen, as I had even received one death
threat myself -- however, living in Canada I feel much safer. I hope you
can make a comeback at some point. Yours, Rick Talbot
Even though I do not believe that your website content is balanced, I believe that your Right to post your content is what makes the American experiment a continued success. People like you make me proud to be an American. May your God continue to grant you wisdom and may your efforts make this world a better place for all. Keep up the good work ! If I can offer a constructive comment: While we can all agree that there are so many problems before us, can you construct and post a group of solutions ? thanks ! Zubic Editor: We should do that together: readers, authors, and editor.

Hello and thanks for your website. I'm sorry about the troubles you've had, but it's to be expected in a country where it seems that too few people have the ability to think critically or logically. That aside, it would be nice if people would at least act civilly, but that does not appear to be "in the cards" either. I've read dozens of news-related websites in the past few months and it seems that every one that posts reader comments shows the same trend: A large percentage of the postings in support of war are peppered with expletives, ignorance, intolerance, aggressiveness and direct threats. While our government uses the fascism of other governments as a pretext for war, our own brand of media-propaganda inspired grassroots fascism is flourishing. You and your website are just one of many alternative media to come under such attacks. Best wishes for a better tomorrow. Larry M. Grill
Dear Dr. Hassan A. El-Najjar
Please accept my sincere apology for the
vicious and cruel hysteria of my fellow American citizens. As
Jesus said, "They know not what they do."
Unfortunately, war brings out the
nonsensical thinking of "my country right or wrong but my
country." I lived in the sixties and if you disagreed with
the war in Vietnam you were told to get out of this
country.
Please know, that I appreciate the fact
that you have tried to bring us the truth about what is going on and
none of us could ask you to risk your life. I will call the
Dalton Daily Citizen and express my dismay and horror at their
tactics.
Sincerely,
The Rev. Marcia Malek
United Church of Christ Pastor
Dear Dr. El-Najjar,
My heart goes out to you and your family
for the risks you have taken and the sacrifices endured so that rest
of us could catch a glimpse, hear an utterance, and feel a murmur of
truth in the world. How dare they threaten your life and the
live of your loved ones for having a website opposed to editing.
With your site, we the believers of ultimate democratic ideals of free
speech, debate, and healthy competition where able to show the
world NOT that there is THE truth to be found, but rather,
that we have found A truth. A truth that has been left out
from the likes of CNN, NBC, and the rest of the from the beginning of
their inception. The truth is that we as
Arabs, Muslims, and Arab-Americans are constantly under attack,
marginalized, and left to fend for ourselves without the protection of
law or representation in government. Whether it is a miniscule
event such as our Qanun activities board here at Columbia Law School
being torn down 16 times this semester alone, or the calamity that
caused your Al-Jazeerah website to be shutdown- we all taste the
humiliation, feel the pressure, and endure the prosecution.
To that end, I believe many in the world
sympathize with our cause for dignity, respect, and
self-determination; which every race, religion, and peoples
deserves. However, it is constantly those oppressors with power
or influence such as politicians backed by lobby groups, media
moguls, and yes, Hollywood- that tend to dehumanize us.
They want to degrade the very fabric of our society, and destroy the
rich history, generosity, and culture that our ancestors have knitted
into our genes.
In the fine tradition of Gibran, I wish I
could lay a gift of gratitude upon the lap of America as you did with
Al-Jazeerah's commitment to publishing uncensored and un-edited pieces
for all free people of the world to see. Instead, we find
ourselves caged within an institution that neither respects our rights
nor wants our contributions. We attempt to provide true freedom
of speech and exchange of ideas, and in return, we are rewarded
with bombs dropped on our news facilities, death threats on our
children, not to mention the economic threats and blackballing.
The very media that is supposed to stand in unity with the
ideals or objectives of Al-Jazeerah have not merely turned the
cold shoulder, but instead have attacked only to inflame hostilities
in an attempt to shut our mouths and cover our eyes.
My Brother, I know the sad reality all too
well- it haunts me in my dreams. It peeps over my shoulder to
control my interactions by fear of being black-balled. It
listens to my telephone conversations and monitors my e-mails.
It labels me anti-Semitic if I have an opinion
on U.S. foreign policy, even if I am a Semite. The
fact is, we love America and all that it once stood for. Now in
a time of crisis, and curtailment of civil liberties, this great
motherland has not been so nurturing towards its most vulnerable
of citizens. Just as the bald eagle occasionally forces her
newborn out of the nest prematurely, we have been left for dead.
It is my hope that we can learn to fly. And soar we will-
when we realize that hard times shall make us better not bitter.
Sincerely,
Mustapha Moose Cheaib
Columbia Law School
My friends:
I think you
should put the site back up as soon as possible. Taking the site down
gives those who oppose it exactly what they want. I understand your
concerns about the death threats but you should really put the site back
up as soon as possible and in fact I think you should make the site
bigger and better so you can really tick them off!
Dear Editor I was shocked to read today that you have been receiving threats and hate mail, and I am deeply saddened that Aljazeerah is no longer available. But I would like to thank you for your excellent - and brave - work, and I wish you all the best for the future. Bill Gilonis Zweierstr.50, CH 8004 Zürich
I am also an immigrant, though not a Muslim, and I support your right to speak your mind. This country is going through some dark times but we all have to focus now on what we want our country to be like. To focus on what it is not, at the moment, will just bring us more of the same. I want a country based on the Bill of Rights where people feel free enough to speak their minds. It is by this right that we can discuss freely the path we want our country to take. I want this freedom and support it for you and for everybody. I want a country that honors the separation of the church (or mosque, temple, etc.) and state so that we can all worship the Creator as we see fit. It is by this right that you can worship the way your conscience asks you to. Unfortunately we are led right now by an administration that is polarizing the country and the world. It is spreading fear and allowing belligerent attitudes and behaviors to flourish. I pray and I trust that this is a passing phase, perhaps a necessary one, where we bring to light this prevalent attitude and then see to change it. Perhaps our energy should be applied politically by making sure that all of us, and our friends, vote in the next election and put these current leaders out of office. Take heart and have courage! There is a saying that it is the darkest before the dawn. Let the dawn come. Be joyful! Janusz Gottwald
Dr. Hassan A. El-Najjar Editor - Al-Jazeera.us
Dear DR. El-Najjar; I'm sure that it is disconcerting to receive both hate mail and threats on your life. It is deplorable how some act toward disagreement. I am a frequent reader of your site. Not because I find the information at Al-Jazeerah more compelling than other coverage, but because I attempt to understand the Arab / Muslim perspective of the U.S. I find it quite confusing. Most of all, I find your caring Robert Fisk as simply anti-American twaddle that does little but breed contempt in the Arab world for the western hypotheses of Iraqi self determination. I can tell you that the American public has no desire to colonize the Middle East. If we see that happening we will vote for an American "regime change" at the next election. The absolute beauty of America is that we not only want, but require a regime change every eight years. Thus, as you are aware, executive power in this country is fluid and one only has to wait for policy to be changed. That reality seems lost on the Arab street. Although, like many in the world, I am greatly distrustful of the U.S. government, I am also greatly distrustful of the media. The is so little historical perspective and the is so much "unconfirmed" information delivered as fact that one wonders where one can get information that is not cluttered with speculative noise. Your publication is certainly guilty of this (as is Fox, CNN, ABC, the New York Times, etc.) I am so very distressed over the condition of the Iraqi people that I find myself obsessed searching for news of basic services that the Iraqi's, particularly the Baghdadi's, are in need. There is a dearth of coverage on the real facts behind the status of electricity and water. Would it not be of benefit for Al-Jazeerah to have direct interviews with those who are working on that problem to give "rolling updates" so some of the confusion can be eliminated. It appears that most journalists would rather report the pain than try to explain what is being done. Now, more than ever, the world needs to know what news can bring them hope. We have enough despair and I would assume that a role for Arabic journalism would be, not only to show the darkness, but also provide whatever light can be seen at the end of the tunnel. In the process I do not propose that you change your editorial bias. If you do track "progress" I think you will differentiate yourselves from the western media. It should be good for business. Please do not take my criticisms as singling out Al-Jazeerah. It certainly is much better than the typical state run media in Syria, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Iran and other dictatorship in the Middle East. I applaud your work but I hope that it evolves into something is more focused on the larger picture and less on sensational and anecdotal stories. Keep up the good work and do not be disparaged. Most Americans have huge hearts and wish only the best for your success and the well-being of the Arab world. David. M. Budge Missoula, MT. USA.
Hi
Don't let these problems get you (and your
site) down. There are plenty of bullies in the world but the
sort of power they have is based on an illusion - their trick is to
make you believe they have all the power and you have none...and if
you had no power why would they be bothering to threaten you and
trying to shut down your site? The only way you can beat them is
by refusing to play their game. Do what you decide to do for
your own reasons and don't let their stupidity and fear bring you down
to their level.
The world's media is in an appalling
state. I am learning Arabic (very very beginner) so that I can
read some of the articles on Al-Jazeera because it seems that it is
the most free news source there is. In the UK, where I live, the
news we receive from the BBC and ITN is, in my opinion, both
laughable and depressing at the same time. The coverage of the
war in Iraq in particular was/is terrible, and I have stopped watching
it because it makes me feel physically sick to think of all the
non-thinking ignorant people who swallow the government propaganda and
believe all they are told with little questioning.
In this climate, the continued existence
of a site like Al-Jazeerah is extremely important. If the big
news corporations wont publish anything controversial or seek the
truth or present balanced ideas and views then this must be done by
lots of small news publications. I agree with a lot of the
opinions I see on Al-Jazeerah, but even if I didn't I would think it
essential for these opinions to be seen and discussed.
Thanks - keep up the good work

I read some articles from Al Jazeerah, comparing with the CNN bark-styled news coverage, it's quality against quantity. The difference is that you are serving the case of the humanity, contrary some US channels how thinks first on their profits. Good luck Baudouin Gers
Dear Mr. Hassan A. El-Najjar, I would like to express my sincere thanks for your efforts to provide balance in the reporting of the invasion of Iraq. I really appreciate the opportunity to read different opinions from a part of the world I am not familiar with. I have been so impressed with the intelligence and the depth of knowledge of your contributors. Please do not be discouraged and keep up the excellent work. Yours truly B. Edbrooke.
I am sorry and deeply regret the threats made to
your life.
I really don't understand it. I have found
your news to be significantly more objective and straight forward than
the (main) American press

How Sad. But we all understand. Time will take care of this im sure. Come back soon and stay safe.................................... Ccc James.
Dear Dr. El-Najjar, I read an online article about your struggle against fascists. I'm glad to know you are taking the threats seriously. I hope the threats will not prevent you from continuing the struggle. Americans are awakening to the threat of fascism. Defenders of liberty are not yet a visible majority, but our numbers are very large -- much larger than the hostile, violent few who threaten, and occasionally assault our side. I urge you not to give up your struggle against intolerance and war. Even though we no longer enjoy all the freedoms this country once stood proudly for, we still have the tools we need to keep resistance alive. I hope you will remain vigilant and continue the hard work of rebuilding American democracy. Please visit my web site: www.cincydemo.org You will see how another community is using the internet to speak during these hostile times. Sincerely, Sam Robinson Cincinnati

I am Rabiah from Singapore. I have been
reading articles and messages on ur site and I have found them most
useful. It is most unfortunate when I routinely hit on ur site again
today to read more stuffs but only to find ur letter, telling us of
the threats u been getting.
This is very sad. It is such a sorry state
we live in these days. Nevertheless, may Allah reward ur efforts and
may He keep u and ur family safe inshaAllah.
I hope to see Al-jazeerah functioning
again soon inshaAllah.

Hello Editor, I am terribly sorry for all the trouble you have suffered from some ignorant and hateful people these past few months. Some of us support your courage in this dark period of American (and world) history. Please try and continue bringing us the news from from the viewpoint of the Middle-Eastern people. Best regards, Sean Ogan - history major at CSULB
Hi,
I'm just writing to you because I think
what you're doing is great and I feel really bad about what some
closed minded people are doing to you. You do have a freedom of speech
and if people don't want to hear what you have to say then they can
not listen. It is very sad when people start to fight each other, who
are on the same side, because of different information. Isn't the
point of freedom of speech to educate the public? It angers me when
people become so closed minded that the only way for their opinion to
be heard is through crushing the opposing opinion.
I have learned so much from your website
and many people don't get to see or read about other countries and
their problems and conflicts. Its not only America which is trying to
protect their way of life. it is unfair for you to be subjected to
violence because you are brave enough to show it. I hope in the future
people will be more tolerant and understanding before they lash out.
You have my best wishes,

As a White Anglo Saxon Protestant middle aged male, I would just like to express my thanks for the valuable service you have provided and I hope will be able to continue providing, to offer balance in reporting and 'world view' in these times of increasing polarisation and propaganda on both sides of the Atlantic. I did not realise that you were based in the US until recently (ok - I suppose the web address xxxx.us should have given me a clue!) and hence it does not surprise me, though it obviously distresses me, that you have received this reaction. I further find it simply astonishing that there is no similar, English language based, service operating from anywhere in the Arab / Islamic world, although this has possibly more to do with my internet search skills and lack of patience than reality. Again, well done, and best wishes for the future.

To the editor:
Do not let threats hamper the truth (which
Al-Jazeerah has portrayed throughout the war in Iraq). Nor
should the threats scare you. Exposing the lie is the *duty* of
all peace loving individuals on this planet. Excellent job in
covering non-filtered news, and continue showing the
truth!!!!!!!!
