Nobel Peace Prize of 2003 Awarded to the Iranian Human Rights Activist, Shirin Ebadi Members and supporters of CITDI are delighted with the decision of the Nobel Committee to award the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize to Iranian female lawyer and Human Rights activist Shirin Ebadi. The decision of the Nobel Committee reflects and affirms, on the world scale, the efforts of the resilient Iranian people, especially women, to transform their country into a democratically governed society based on the universal principles of Human Rights, peace and human dignity. Shirin Ebadi’s commendable and indefatigable efforts as a lawyer and feminist activist to defend, uphold, and expand the rights of Iranian women, children, and political prisoners or victims of political and cultural repression are a telling testimony to painful, though constantly challenged, but confident and peaceful transition to democracy in Iran. The Comité International pour la Transition à la Démocratie en Iran shares the joy of Iranian people on this historical occasion and congratulates all Human Rights and democratic activists in her country and elsewhere in the region. The momentous decision of Nobel Committee is a symbol of the support of the global public opinion and international civil society for the struggle of Iranian people to live in peace, dignity and democracy. Kerry - A Man of Courage and Vision Live Free or Die state democrats, please think hard and long before endorsing a sound-bite candidate who is using Tammany Hall politics to seal a primary win. I grew up on a small farm in New Hampshire and cut my political teeth as a teen in support of John F. Kennedy for President. Today I support John F. Kerry for President with the same passion and commitment. I first met Kerry in 1984 when he was Lt. Governor of Massachusetts. A study showed that acid deposition from coal fired power plants was destroying forests and leaching toxins into waterways. I came up with a plan for an Acid Rain Awareness Day, boldly marched into the Massachusetts Democratic Convention, and approached Kerry for support. He not only listened and got the governor to sponsor it, he participated every step of the way. As result, Massachusetts has some of the toughest environmental laws in the country. Today, Kerry demonstrates the same commitment to sound national and global environmental policy. Kerry is a complex thinker, a man of great courage who risked his life for others in the heat of battle then turned around to fight for peace. He exposed the Iran Contra scandal at great political cost and has fought for a full spectrum of issues that benefit you and me rather than corporate greed. Kerry not only has a Lincoln like stature, he has the diplomacy and the depth and breadth of thought needed to unite a divided country and a divided world. Sincerely, Genevieve Cora Fraser
Two faces of India (By Ghulam Muhammed) Al-Jazeerah, 12/9/03 If you are not Ghulam Muhammed, please forward this mail to that person. Dear Sir, You say "The recent victories by ultra-nationalist Hindutva BJP in 3 states, while Vajpayee is credited with rejecting the old electoral gimmickry of Babri-Masjid/ Ram Mandir politicization, and proving to his own party detractors that BJP can win even without religious mobilization, the Muslims will not be placated and will not relent without getting their full political rights in a democratic India entering the 21st century." Muslims ARE getting their full political rights today, as far as we know. Which particular right do you think they were being denied of? Regards Kayamat
